It’s been a fair few months since Matt Taylor, 45, embarassed himself on BBC Breakfast with his Rick Astley, 55, blunder, and the singer wasn’t going to let it go any time soon. Instead, he wished the weather presenter a happy birthday, despite the awkward on-air gaffe last year that left them both red-faced.
You really are the kindest!
The forecaster was left mortified after he admitted he isn’t a fan of the singer, completely unaware that the 80s pop legend was listening in.
But as Matt celebrates his 45th birthday today, the memorable moment prompted Astley to send his biggest fan some much needed birthday wishes.
Taking to Twitter, he penned: “Couldn’t let this day pass without wishing my number one fan Happy Birthday.
Hope it’s a great one @MetMattTaylor – Rick x.”
While drenched in sarcasm, his post was well received by Matt who praised him for being so generous.
“You really are the kindest! Thank you very much Rick. All the best sir. Matt (officially your biggest fan!).”
In a separate tweet, he added: “Proof (if ever it was needed) that @rickastley is one of the kindest and most generous people around!”
Dan Walker also weighed in on the sweet exchange, having watched the awkward yet hilarious moment go down on-air.
Summing it up in a simple word, he commented: “Wonderful,” alongside a laughing emoji, while fans also couldn’t contain their laughter.
Breakfast fans might recall the blunder themselves, where at the end of his weather report, hosts Charlie Stayt and Louise Minchin quizzed him about whether he was a fan of Astley’s music, just before they switched to interview him.
But the oblivious meteorologist – whose forecasts are filmed in a different studio – bluntly replied: “Erm, not a massive one.”
Knowing the Never Gonna Give You Up singer could hear everything, Charlie cheekily gave his BBC colleague an opportunity to dig himself out of a hole.
Giggling, he said: “Well, that was the wrong thing to say…
|He’s listening and he’s coming up in just a moment. I’ll ask you again, are you a Rick Astley fan?”
Realising his mistake, a flustered Matt seized the chance to redeem himself, hastily replying: “Love Rick Astley. The best. Grew up with him.”
The hosts struggled to keep straight faces as Charlie added: “Great, he’s coming up next so he’ll be grateful to hear that.
“He heard everything you said, Matt. The damage is done.”
Fortunately, Astley saw the funny side, with Zoom footage capturing the singer in fits of laughter while watching the scene play out.
The blunder reached far and wide with rival breakfast show host Piers Morgan even referencing the moment on Twitter sometime later.
He quipped: “Has anyone retrieved poor Mr Taylor from under the bus yet?”
Happy birthday, Matt!
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
