Gardeners’ World presenter Carol Klein, 75, has issued a warning to Zoe Ball, 49, during an appearance on the host’s BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show today. The gardening expert urged Zoe to be “patient” after she admitted to “pulling out” her growing carrots in her vegetable plot at home.

Carol got onto the subject while the pair were discussing her new book, entitled RHS Grow Your Own Veg & Fruit Bible.

The star told Zoe: “I’ve heard all about your carrots.”

The Strictly Come Dancing presenter then gushed over her new hobby, revealing she has been growing vegetables during the coronavirus lockdown.

However, she admitted becoming “impatient” to see results and whether the carrots are growing well.

Zoe exclaimed: “Oh yes, I know, very excited about the carrots!

“I pulled one out because I was so impatient like a child, a very little child, I pulled one out just to see how much they’ve grown – they’re doing beautifully.

“My sweetcorn is doing alright, had a nightmare with a black fly on the broad beans so I’m not sure how they’re going to turn out, but I guess it’s that thing of a little bit of trial and error as well, isn’t it?”

The radio host continued: “But that’s why a book like this is great because you need to start at the very beginning and check your soil, don’t you?

“And your plot and where it is and sometimes it’s confusing because you’re not sure how often to water things and how to keep the bugs off in a safe way that’s good for fruit and veg.”

Reassuring Zoe as a newcomer to gardening, Carol replied: “Yeah, but on the other hand it’s all common sense, so common sense tempered with a good read of this!”

Later in the show, Carol responded to questions from listeners who were facing their own gardening dilemmas and used one situation to remind Zoe to “leave her carrots alone”.

While giving advice to one listener about their azaleas, Carol explained: “Well azaleas, rhododendrons, all the same thing, really difficult to propagate from cuttings.

“But what she’s done or tried to do is the right way to go about it, so just have another go.

“It’s called layering and the principle is if you bend a branch down… she needs my other book, she needs Grow Your Own Garden, that will tell her all about layering!

“Scrape a bit of the bark off the piece which you’re burying and pin it down and put it into a shallow trench, a couple of staples over the top, fill that with soil and be patient, it takes a year.”

Zoe quipped in response: “There we go, it’s the patience that some of us lack.

“Carol, you’ve been doing this for years and some of us are just beginners.”

Carol then interjected and warned the star: “So leave those carrots alone Zoe!”

Fortunately, Zoe seemed to appreciate Carol’s expertise and jokingly chimed: “Leave those carrots!

“Get back from those carrots Ball!”
