‘Counting On’ matriarch ‘Grandma’ Mary Duggar died of an accidental drowning after church

Details surrounding the sudden death of “Grandma” Mary Duggar are coming to light.

Mary, who often appeared alongside her family on the TLC shows “19 Kids & Counting” and “Counting On,” died of an accidental drowning in a swimming pool  Sunday, Washington County Coroner Roger Morris confirmed to USA TODAY Wednesday.

“It appears she slipped and fell into the pool,” Morris said, adding that the accident took place at Mary’s home in Springdale, Arkansas, on June 9. She was 78.

Jill Duggar Dillard, the fourth of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s 19 children, first revealed news of Mary Duggar’s death on Instagram Sunday in a touching tribute, writing, “My heart breaks… Grandma, you are greatly missed by all who knew you!”

In a blog post published Monday, Dillard added, “I was in disbelief when I got the word that she had tragically died. I’m still having a hard time processing the reality of her passing.”

Jana Duggar, the eldest daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle, revealed that “Grandma” Mary attended church just hours before she died.

“On her last morning spent here on earth I drove Grandma to church where she worshiped her Savior,” she wrote on Instagram Monday. “Later that afternoon, she went to meet Him face to face! I’d say that’s probably how she would’ve chosen to finish out the day if she got to pick.”

The Duggars memorialized their family’s matriarch on their official Facebook page Sunday, writing, “She is greatly loved and will be missed so very much!”

“We are so sad to share that Grandma Duggar (Mary) passed away Sunday afternoon,” the post began. “She lived a tremendous life as a follower of Christ, a wife, a devoted mother, a loving mother-in-law, and a much-loved grandmother.”

The post concluded: “We deeply appreciate your prayers for our family and all who loved Mary during this time.”

“Grandma” Mary, who worked as a real estate broker, is survived by son Jim Bob and daughter Deanna, 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, with several more on the way.

Most recently, Jessa and Ben Seewald welcomed their third child, daughter Ivy Jane Seewald, at their Arkansas home on May 26. Ivy marked “Grandma” Mary’s 13th great-grandchild.

Jessa is the fifth child of Jim Bob and Michelle.

“She was so excited about the many new great-grandbabies due this coming fall and winter, and it never got old for her. She welcomed each new baby with joy and would hold them with such tenderness and delight,” Jessa captioned an Instagram picture of Mary holding baby Ivy Tuesday. “We’re sad that they will not have the blessing of knowing her in person as we have.”
