R&B singer-songwriter, Fantasia recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Billboard to chat about her forthcoming album, Sketchbook.
Her first full-length album since 2016’s The Definition Of…, the album has been inspired by her husband, Kendall Taylor‘s taste in music.
“I wanted a bop, I wanted an album that dudes could rock to, because I always knew I had the ladies,” she shared jokingly.
Fantasia told Billboard said intends to showcase her skill with a much wider variety of genres on Sketchbook, which is slated for release this fall.
“I love all genres of music. Not just R&B. Not just gospel,” she said. “On this album, I wanted to bring that to life but with a much hipper and younger sound.”
The 35-year-old “American Idol” winner also shared that the title of the album came to her completely out of the blue, revealing that the exact moment may have snuck up on her while she was getting a portrait commissioned by an artist whose work she had been introduced to in a studio in which worked, and which she had subsequently come to love.
“Sketches are not perfect. You see the flaws and certain things but I’m still growing and whatever God has in mind, I’m still becoming that woman. I want people to see my journey, the fact that I’m being sketched in and I want them to hear it through the music this time,” Fantasia said.
The songstress is also slated to go on a North American tour alongside Robin Thicke, Tank and Bonfyre. The 29-date trek will kick off on October 17 in Columbia, South Carolina, and will wrap up on December 6 in Los Angeles.
