FKA twigs has filed a lawsuit against her ex-boyfriend, Shia LaBeouf, citing ‘relentless’ abuse.
The musician – real name Tahliah Debrett Barnett – filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court, the New York Times reported on Friday.
In the lawsuit, the 32-year-old accused the Transformers star of sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress.
According to the lawsuit, LaBeouf was driving recklessly in a car with FKA twigs shortly after Valentine’s Day in 2019 before removing his seatbelt and threatening to crash unless she professed her love for him.
The lawsuit claims that the actor abused the Grammy nominee ‘physically, emotionally, and mentally many times in a relationship that lasted just short of a year.’
LaBeouf told The New York Times in an email: ‘I’m not in any position to tell anyone how my behavior made them feel.
‘I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalizations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years.
‘I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I’m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say.’
When he was given a more detailed account of the claims, he responded in another email that ‘many of these allegations are not true,’ but he owed the women ‘the opportunity to air their statements publicly and accept accountability for those things I have done.’
The actor stated he was ‘a sober member of a 12-step program’ and also in therapy.
He wrote: ‘I am not cured of my PTSD and alcoholism, but I am committed to doing what I need to do to recover, and I will forever be sorry to the people that I may have harmed along the way.’
According to the NYT, FKA twigs said she has chosen to come forward to help others.
‘I’d like to be able to raise awareness on the tactics that abusers use to control you and take away your agency,’ she told the publication.
The Honey Boy actor’s former girlfriend, stylist Karolyn Pho has made similar allegations to the NYT, some of which are included in the lawsuit.
LaBeouf has previously been arrested on charges that were later dismissed, including disorderly conduct and assault.
Metro.co.uk has contacted representatives of FKA twigs and Shia LaBeouf for further comment.
