Liam Payne shares message marking ‘exact time’ One Direction was formed

Today marks 10 years since One Direction came into our lives, and to celebrate, Liam Payne has shared what he’s called the ‘exact moment’ the band formed.

Sharing a screenshot of a message he sent to his dad all those years ago when the group – also made up of Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik – was put together by Simon Cowell on X Factor in 2010, Liam has taken us way back down memory lane.

His text message simply said: ‘I’m in a boyband.’

And thus, history was made and our lives (and theirs, we suppose) were changed forever!

Liam wrote: ‘What a journey… I had no idea what we were in for when I sent this text to my Dad ten years ago at this exact time the band was formed.

‘Thanks to everyone that’s supported us over the years and thanks to the boys for sharing this with me #10YearsOfOneDirection.’

If you cast your mind back a decade – yes, it’s been that long – the five lads auditioned as solo artists, however Simon had another idea and decided to unite them as a boy band.

And, despite not even winning the show that year – that honour went to Matt Cardle – One Direction went on to become arguably the biggest X Factor stars to date (along with Little Mix, of course).

Joining Capital Breakfast this morning, Liam recalled the early days of the group when the ‘rowdy’ boys would ‘throw plates down stairs and out windows’.

He said: ‘It was crazy to be involved in this group of really rowdy boys, who just used to go off all the time.

‘I remember being in hotel rooms and plates were being thrown out the window and down the stairs, and it was really a crazy time and a lot to get used to, and for my head at least.

‘I was a bit too grown up in that sense; I needed to grow down and have a little bit of fun, because that was what it was all about, and in the end that is what everyone chimed in with the band for – it was more about this freedom and having fun and what would you do if you were in this position.’

Fans of the group, which went on hiatus in 2015, five months after Zayn left the band, have been waiting with tingling anticipation to see what the legends had in store when they emerged on social media to tease their anniversary.

Yesterday they wrote on social media: ‘Tomorrow! You and me got a whole lot of history #10YearsOf1D.’

Alongside that message that old us nothing, but also told us oh-so-much was a picture with text reading: ’10 years of One Direction’.

Think it’s fair to say with Liam’s message now kicking off the day of days we cannot wait to see what else the boys have for us.

Happy anniversary, 1D!
