Beach Boys co-founder, Mike Love recently spoke with Billboard about his cover of The Ramones‘ 1977 classic, “Rockaway Beach,” which was released on Thursday.
“It felt so natural to sing it,” said the 78-year-old singer. “It fits beautifully in the Beach Boys surfing song genre. Not only is it a great song, it’s also right in my vocal range. It’s almost as if it was designed for me to sing, and that’s why I am so eager to play it live.”
Ramones’ drummer Marky Ramone added that they “were very aware of the Beach Boys,” calling “Rockaway Beach” deeply influenced by the band.
“We were big music fans and we’d talk about all types bands, musicians, our influences. I think you can hear the resemblance in ‘I Wanna Be Sedated’ and the end of the song—BaBaBaBa I wanna be sedated,” Ramone said.
Love is gearing up to release 12 Slides Of Summer, an equal mix of old and new tracks, including “Rockaway Beach” and “California Sun,” among others. The album is set to be released on July 19.
