Tommy Dorfman feels 'genuinely happy' for first time after coming out as trans

Tommy Dorfman reintroduced herself to the world as a transgender woman in an interview with Time in July, and has now opened up about the impact transitioning has had on her happiness.

The 13 Reasons Why star, 29, told InStyle that her ‘medical’ transition during the pandemic felt like a ‘second puberty’ and, although it was ‘a scary thing,’ she now feels better than ever.

‘I only take hormones. I just switched my hormones, and I’ve never felt better in my life,’ she said.

‘I spent 28 years of my life suicidal and depressed and recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. I don’t think I’ve ever been genuinely happy until this past year.’

Tommy revealed she notices a difference in photos of herself since she got into the industry, and used to look so ‘f**king unhappy’ in every picture.

The actor explained how her transition has changed the way she treats others too, with an anecdote about running into an old friend for the first time since publicly coming out.

The friend said Tommy previously ‘looked so cold,’ but once she started taking estrogen and testosterone left her body, she ‘sank into the earth and was grounded,’ and also felt ‘more energised.’

‘I feel how I think I was always supposed to feel,’ she continued.

Tommy also paid tribute to the ‘incredible’ trans figures she looks up to, saying people like Emmy-nominated actor Laverne Cox, Pose star Mj Rodriguez and writer and performer Charlene Incarnate, as well as her friends Jamie Clayton, Our Lady J and Hari Nef, inspire her and make her feel ‘powerful.’

When asked what words of encouragement she had to trans youth who aren’t at her point yet, simply and beautifully, she added: ‘You are divinely held.’

The star is soon to appear in Lena Dunham’s Sharp Stick, her first role since publicly living as a woman.
