Taylor Swift‘s petition in support of the Equality Act has finally evoked a reaction from the White House.
Swift had called out the White House during her acceptance speech after winning Video Of The Year at this MTV Video Music Awards for her LGBTQ pride anthem, “You Need To Calm Down.”.
The pop superstar thanked everyone who signed the petition, which she noted has half-a-million signatures, five times the number required to warrant a response from the White House.
White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere responded to the petition a day later.
“The Trump administration absolutely opposes discrimination of any kind and supports the equal treatment of all,” Deere said in a statement. “However, the House-passed bill in its current form is filled with poison pills that threaten to undermine parental and conscience rights.”
The Equality Act was passed in the Democratic-controlled House but has not yet been taken up for a vote in the Senate, where the Republican party is in control.
