The Eternals trailer landed online yesterday, giving Marvel fans a first proper look at the third of four MCU movies to release this year. The film follows an immortal alien race created by the Celestials who have secretly lived on Earth for over 7000 years. And now the introduction of the circular cosmic energy seen in the first trailer could well be setting up the Fantastic Four and Marvel villain Galactus.
During the Eternals trailer, Angelina Jolie’s Thena is seen surrounded by this cosmic energy, while Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos is shown manipulating it.
Interestingly, Screen Rant point out that cosmic microwave background radiation, defined as “relic radiation dating back to the Big Bang” was referenced in WandaVision.
And a number of the Eternals have powers based on cosmic energy. For example, Thena can form weapons with it, while Ikaris can project beams from his eyes.
Now given that a new Fantastic Four movie is in the works at Marvel Studios, the outlet points out how they were given their abilities after being hit by cosmic rays.
Additionally, Marvel villain Galactus is associated with an energy known as the Power Cosmic which this cosmic energy could be related to.
This destroyer of planets imbues his Heralds like the Silver Surfer with similar abilities to the Eternals in the comics.
Just as the Quantum Realm and Infinity Stones were important to the MCU’s Infinity Saga, it looks like this cosmic energy will playing a big part moving forwards too.
Additionally, Marvel Phase 4 is set to explore the multiverse and time travel going forwards.
Loki: Tom Hiddleston announces release date
Next month, Loki hits Disney+, following the 2012 alternate version of the villain who escaped with the Tesseract in Avengers Endgame.
From the first trailers, it’s clear he’s been captured by the Time Variance Authority for messing with the timeline.
As a variant, he’s required to fix it, although we wouldn’t be surprised if Loki makes it even worse.
Then there’s Spider-Man: No Way Home which is rumoured to feature former Peter Parkers Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, plus a whole host of former Sony villains.

Doctor Strange 2 ‘will feature Mr Fantastic, Professor X and Namor’ [DOCTOR STRANGE 2]
While next year, fans are treated to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in which it’s theorised that Scarlet Witch will travel through alternate realities to find her children from WandaVision.
If a messed up timeline and multiverse wasn’t enough, Marvel time-travelling villain Kang the Conqueror is set to enter the MCU in 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
As for where this is all heading, our best bet is an Avengers 5 based on the Secret Wars comic book storyline.
In Secret Wars, the Marvel multiverse collides with multiple versions of the same characters existing simultaneously.
Considering the rumours about three Peter Parkers in Spider-Man: No Way Home and then a number of Loki variants in June’s Disney+ show, we wouldn’t be surprised if this is what’s being built up to.
Plus, let’s not forget that Kang the Conqueror is known in the comics for working alongside various versions of himself.
But as for how cosmic energy would fit into all of this is anyone’s guess at this point. No doubt the Eternals will have a big role to play.
Eternals is set for release in cinemas on November 5, 2021.
