Star Wars fans are getting increasingly excited, with The Rise of Skywalker less than a month away and The Mandalorian on Disney+ going over like gangbusters. The film future of the galaxy far, far away remains somewhat murky, but it’s clear who many people would like to see in the next movie: Idris Elba.
Screen Rant provided a whole list of Marvel actors they’d like to see cross over into Star Wars, since Marvel President Kevin Feige has announced his intentions to produce a Star Wars film. A number of actors from his Marvel movies have volunteered to be in his Star Wars movie, but Elba may be the most interesting choice.
Why Idris Elba?
Well, why not Idris Elba? The actor is in high demand, with him shooting to the top of fans’ wish lists for various franchises. People have clamored for him to be the next James Bond, although the actor decided not to pursue that iconic role because of all the baggage it would carry.
However, the actor has popped up in many an action spectacular, including Pacific Rim, Star Trek Beyond and most recently, Fast & Furious Presents Hobbs and Shaw, where he played a cyborg bad guy who called himself “black Superman.” And of course, there was his time in the MCU playing Heimdall in Thor: The Dark World. That’s generally regarded as one of Marvel’s weaker films, but that’s hardly Elba’s fault.
And besides all that, Elba is, quite simply, a very good actor. He has six Golden Globe nominations: for Beasts of No Nation and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and four for Luther.
When you can play both Nelson Mandela and a killer cyborg, that’s range.
What actors have done double duty in the MCU and Star Wars?
If Elba were to be in a Star Wars movie, he would be one of several actors to pull double duty for the two Disney mega-franchises. His Thor: The Dark World castmate Natalie Portman immediately comes to mind, since she played Queen Amidala and will reprise her role as Jane Foster in Thor Ragnarok.
Because Samuel L. Jackson seemingly stars in every other movie released, he’s also a veteran of the MCU with Nick Fury, and of Star Wars with Mace Windu in the prequel trilogy. Other actors with Star Wars and Marvel under their belts include Paul Bettany, Benicio Del Toro, Lupita Nyong’o, Mads Mikkelsen, Andy Serkis, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, and Donald Glover.
Then there are those Marvel actors who haven’t been in a Star Wars movie yet but who have made it very, very clear they would very much like to be. When Feige’s Star Wars movie was announced, Chris Evans quickly said he’d like to be in it.
Brie Larson made an even stronger play, not only on social media but via appearances at a number of Star Wars events, including the opening of Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland.
Just what will the next Star Wars movie be?
Now we just have to wait and see what’s next for Star Wars. Lucasfilm has a movie scheduled for release in 2022. That had presumably been the slot for the movie or trilogy that was going to be made by Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and DB Weiss, but they left to focus on their Netflix deal instead. A trilogy by Last Jedi director Rian Johnson seems to be in limbo, with his film having sharply divided fans. And no one seems to know exactly when the Kevin Feige movie would be.
Interestingly, Lucasfilm recently announced they had a director selected for the 2022 Star Wars movie, but they do not plan to reveal who that is until next year. Under Disney, the franchise has struggled to keep directors on the projects. Both of the standalone Star Wars Story movies had production trouble, with Rogue One having extensive reshoots and Solo having directors switched midstream.
Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) was going to direct Episode IX, but he departed amid creative differences, facilitating the return of JJ Abrams.
Whoever that director turns out to be, they’ll certainly have an interesting gallery of actors to choose from, whether Elba ends up making the cut or not.
