Who Are the Knights of Ren? Will They Appear in 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker'?

Star Wars fans endured a lot in Star Wars: The Last Jedi — from porgs to Luke’s “death.” One thing that was noticeably missing from The Last Jedi was Kylo’s elite squad of warriors, named the Knights of Ren. Who are the Knights of Ren? Will they be in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker? Here’s what we know about the mysterious characters.

Fans first saw the Knights of Ren with Kylo Ren in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

Viewers are first introduced to the Knights of Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, through Rey’s vision. When the young Jedi first touches Luke’s lightsaber, she sees multiple brief scenes, including her parents abandoning her and the leader of the First Order, Kylo Ren.

When she sees Kylo Ren standing with his lightsaber in the rain, there are multiple figures, dressed in black, standing behind him. Fans learned that these are the Knights of Ren, an elite fighting squad led by Kylo Ren. Although the origin of these warriors is not exactly clear, some fans speculate these are the “handful of Luke’s students” who Kylo took with him after destroying the Jedi temple.

Why did Rian Johnson not include the Knights of Ren in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

Although Star Wars: The Last Jedi included a battle with Kylo Ren and Rey, the Knights of Ren were noticeably missing. In an interview with Empire Magazine, director Rian Johnson stated he didn’t want to include the Knights of Ren in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

“I guess I could’ve used them in place of the Praetorian guards but then it would feel like wasting them because all those guards had to die. And if Kylo had some kind of connection to them it would’ve added a complication that wouldn’t have helped the scene,” Johnson said. “Truth is, I just didn’t see a place for them in the movie.”

Will the Knights of Ren be in Episode 9, ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’?

There are rumors that the mysterious group lead by Kylo Ren will finally be making an appearance in the last installment of Star Wars’ sequel trilogy. According to Vanity Fair, the Knights of Ren will return to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — the publication released pictures of the warriors standing with the director, J.J. Abrams.

“When he’s screening candidates for the Knights of Ren, Snoke asks basic job interview questions like ‘What are your biggest weaknesses’ but you have to answer with things like ‘love’ or ‘my family,’” joked one fan on Twitter.

“Just *clenches fist* imagine the Knights of Ren being all women,” said another Twitter user. While no story details have been confirmed, some say they’re looking forward to a potential battle featuring Kylo’s Knights.

“I hope The Rise of Skywalker explores the Knights of Ren. That was what interested me the most about The Force Awakens. I was looking forward to some new lore,” said one Twitter user.

Disney’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres in the United States on December 20, 2019.
