Inside Ricky Gervais £100m net worth as new comedy special drops on Netflix

Ricky Gervais, star and creator of The Office and Afterlife, returns to Netflix this week with a new stand-up special called Ricky Gervais: SuperNature, which sees him once more in typically controversial form.

The 60-year-old comic tackles a range of taboo subjects in SuperNature, including cancer, Adolf Hitler, Aids and famine. The new special is his first since Humanity, which made its debut on Netflix in 2018.

Gervais has defended his decision to cover such controversial topics in his comedy, saying he wants to challenge his audience. But what exactly do we know about Ricky Gervais – and when will his new stand-up special be available on Netflix?

How much is Ricky Gervais' net worth?

Ricky Gervais’ successes as a stand-up comic and actor have made him very wealthy. His net worth has been estimated at around $140 million (£111.4 million).

Gervais has joked about reports of his wealth in the past, however. In 2011, when it was reported that he was worth $80million (£64million), he sarcastically remarked on his blog that there must have been "a leak at my accountants".

"Now this is out, I will have to get my family a million scratchcards each for Christmas. I have decided to use the rest of the money to take over Libya," he added.

Gervais has also said, more seriously, that he pays his taxes "gladly" to support the NHS and public services.

How did Ricky Gervais get famous?

Ricky Gervais first shot to stardom with The Office, the critically-acclaimed fly-on-the-wall mockumentary, which made its BBC debut in the summer of 2001.

When it was first aired, the series received little attention, but repeat airings and word of mouth saw it build up a strong cult following.

Prior to starring in The Office, Gervais had risen to national attention through his appearances on Channel 4’s The 11 O’Clock Show, which also launched Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G to fame.

He had previously been a musician, forming one half of ‘80s synth-pop duo Seona Dancing. The duo released two singles, both of which failed to chart in the UK.

What is Ricky Gervais: SuperNature about?

Ricky Gervais’ new Netflix stand-up special, SuperNature, sees the comedian calling the supposed rules of comedy into question, baiting various controversies along the way.

In particular, Gervais focuses on dark humour, insisting that it is possible to use it without necessarily being an irredeemable human being.

Speaking to Steven Colbert on The Late Show, Gervais explained that his aim in addressing “taboo subjects” was “to take the audience to a place it hasn't been before”.

Gervais’ SuperNature tour began in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic forced him to postpone it for several months. It was eventually completed last year.

The comedian has donated just over £427,000 of the proceeds of the tour to various animal charities, including International Animal Rescue and Nowzad, which supports animal shelters in Ukraine.

When is Ricky Gervais: SuperNature on Netflix?

Ricky Gervais: SuperNature will be available to watch globally on Netflix from Tuesday, May 24.
