The Wanted star was born on August 4, 1988, in Bolton, England, and enjoyed music and singing throughout his childhood.

By the age of 16, he learned to play the guitar after playing and practising on his older brother's one.

At that same age in 2004 with his guitar skills getting better the teen auditioned for The X Factor but it went horribly wrong.

In fact, it went so bad Tom told The Metro in 2011 that he "didn't sing for years" after it left him "shattered" after he received no's from the judges before even getting to the chorus.

He told the publication years later once he had found fame with The Wanted: "It was a no before I even finished the chorus. I was 16 and it shattered me."

Tom was rejected by judge Simon Cowell and the others before he even got to finish singing ‘Flying Without Wings’ by Westlife.

Speaking on the song choice, he told Metro it was a "a big mistake because it’s your typical boyband song".

He continued: "I was 16 and it shattered me. I didn't sing for two years."

Tom went on to recall: "There was a girl who was really terrible at the same audition who got through.

"It turned out she was one of the people they put in the show to laugh at."

Years later, Tom finally got to show Simon what he's capable of as he performed for The X Factor with his The Wanted bandmates during a results show in November 2010.

The band blew judges and the audience away when they sang their hit song, Lose My Mind.

While his audition for the X Factor was a shambles, luckily for Tom things went perfectly when he auditioned to be a member of The Wanted.

During the same interview with The Metro, Tom recalled how the band's manager Jane "must have saw something in him".

He recalled: "Our manager, Jane, started calling me Pete Doherty, which wasn't a great sign.

"I turned up wearing a tracksuit with my hood up, so I looked a bit chavvy, but played 'Handbags and Gladrags' on the guitar. Maybe she saw something in me no-one else did at the time."

Tom's life changed forever in 2009 when the band consisting of Tom, Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, and Nathan Sykes, was formed.
