Ben Shephard baffled as Tipping Point contestant confuses knitting as a sport

Tipping Point was back on our screens this afternoon (October 2) as ITV aired another episode of the popular game show.

Host Ben Shephard welcomed four contestants to the famous ITV studio as they battled it out to win the highly sought after cash prizes.

Bob, Ruth, Ben and Sarojini answered a series of questions to win turns on an arcade-style machine.

Dropping tokens down a choice of four chutes, they each hoped to knock piles of the counters off a moving shelve – the more they collected, the greater the prize fund.

Things got off to a tricky start for contestant Ben today as a question about croquet tripped him up in the first round.

"What is the name of the sport that involves hitting wooden balls with a mallet through hoops?," asked the presenter.

Contestant Ben answered: "Crochet"

The host quickly pointed out: "Crochet is knitting. You mean croquet. I can't accept that. I'm going to have to take the counter off you."

Viewers at home were left gobsmacked at contestant Ben's major blunder.

Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: "Crochet. That well known sport."

Another added: "Crochet? Get off my TV."

A third jokingly asked: "Crochet – how do you play it?"

While a fourth viewer moaned: "OMG is Ben serious?"

While a fourth said: "That well known lawn sport featuring balls and mallets, known as crochet."

"Ben I can't believe you said crochet," a fifth viewer moaned.

Things went from bad to worse for contestant Ben when he answered another easy question incorrectly.

Presenter Ben asked: "How many letter a's is there in the band name Bananarama?"

Contestant Ben quickly answered: "three" when the answer was in fact five.

Host Ben explained: "There are three letter a's in banana but there are two more letter a's in rama."

Contestant Ben's two major mistakes costed him his place on the show and the contestant was sent packing after the first round.

Ruth was sent packing in the second round and Bob and Sarojini fought it out in the third round for a place in the final.

Sarojini was the lucky contestant who made it through to the fourth round of the quiz show.
