The Sister Julienne actress has played the nun on hit BBC series Call The Midwife since it started in 2012. Appearing on The One Show on Thursday, Jenny discussed her role and her character’s traditional nun’s outfit of a wimple and robes, which she described as “liberating” to wear. The 68-year-old admitted though that she did often feel jealousy towards colleagues such as Helen George, who stars as fun-loving Trixie Franklin.

The One Show host Rylan Clark-Neal talked to the actress ahead of the Call The Midwife Christmas special.

The episode will air ahead of series 11, which will hit screens in 2022.

On the subject of Sister Julienne’s clothing, Rylan, 33, asked: “Do you think, ‘brilliant, because I don’t have to spend hours in hair and makeup I literally just put the little hat on and have a lovely time’?”

“Yeah,” Jenny agreed, before recalling a time her character donned a different dress code.

“Are you bored of that hat yet?” the host asked.

The TV and theatre star replied: “I’ve been let out once. I had one opportunity to – Sister Julienne actually wanted to know what it was like, she was challenged by somebody who said, ‘you’re always in your robes and you don’t know what it’s like for women’, so she kind of snuck out – and then quickly got back into her robes again.

“But I must say I do still enjoy the fact that I can go and  get my wimple on and it’s lovely you know.”

“It must be quite liberating as well,” Rylan commented.

“It is liberating,” the actress confirmed before she went on to express her envy of co-star Helen: “Although sometimes I look at Helen George playing Trixie and all the wonderful outfits she comes out in and I think perhaps I could even have a lovely silk pair of pyjamas or something, but I can’t.”

“Just a little bit bitter there?” Rylan asked as Jenny laughed and agreed.

Call the Midwife is set to return to screens during the festive period for a Christmas special.

Series 11 is scheduled to air in January.

Fans of the show are eagerly awaiting the next instalments to find out what their favourite nuns and midwives have been up to.

Viewers will also be pleased that Miriam Margolyes will be reprising her role as Sister Mildred in the Christmas instalment.

Her character didn’t appear in the 10th series due to travel restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on This Morning recently, the 80-year-old explained: “I’m going to be in the Christmas special. So, I’m very proud to say that.

“I’ve filmed that and I am still the Mother Superior and don’t you forget it!”

Call the Midwife will return to BBC One with a Christmas Special next month, with season 11 premiering in 2022.
