Faye Brookes looks devastated after being forced to hand £30,000 engagement ring back and unfollowing Gareth Gates since break up

FAYE Brookes looked devastated as she stepped out for the first time since splitting from Gareth Gates and handing back her £30,000 engagement ring.

The 31-year-old  – who has already unfollowed her ex on Instagram – failed to raise a smile as she was spotted at the train station in Manchester yesterday dressed all in black – with her ring finger noticeably bare.

Yesterday we revealed Gareth had asked for the ring back and that a heartbroken Faye had cut contact with Gareth by unfollowing him online.

A source told The Sun Online: "The split has been really upsetting for both parties.

"Gareth asked Faye to hand the ring over after they broke up."

The insider continued: "Faye was surprised but gave it back to him without a fuss."

We revealed their engagement was off earlier this week after they struggled to make things work.

The former couple dated on and off for the last seven years, with Gareth proposing in January this year.

However, their romance has not always been smooth sailing as they split in September last year, only to reunite and get engaged four months later.

Gareth was accused of being "controlling", as The Sun revealed their split last year was because of his refusal to let Faye socialise with her Corrie co-stars without him, which led to constant rows.

An insider said at the time: “At certain points in their relationship Gareth was very controlling.

“He wasn’t always happy with Faye going on nights out with her friends from work without him which inevitably led to arguments between them."

The actress has cancelled her plans to move to London to pursue her career, but doesn't know who to confide in about the split, as Gareth, 35, warned her people could sell her story for financial gain.

A source close to Faye – who played Kate Connor in the ITV soap – told The Sun Online: "Gareth convinced her people just wanted to make money out of her and not to trust them.

"Even those with the best of intentions are scared to offer advice in case it backfires".
