During the 1980s Joan Collins was on-screen in the hit American soap opera Dynasty. She soared to fame playing Alexis Colby in the show, the ex-wife of oil tycoon Blake Carrington (played by John Forsythe). In 1983 Joan was awarded a Golden Globe for her performance in Dynasty. The 80s were not only a time of success in Joan’s career, but also a time of luxury and glamour for some. Reflecting on her own experience in the decade, the actress has confessed she misses the 80s lifestyle.

Joan was an icon of glamour and luxury in her role on Dynasty and mirrored that in her own life.

The actress has admitted she revelled in the decade of excess and “greed”.

She noted the wealthy lifestyle was led by brash money makers whose mascot was fictional corporate raider Gordon Gekko in the 1987 film Wall Street.

The star chatted about her love of the 80s and her time on Dynasty in a recent interview.

Speaking about Dynasty’s success, Joan remarked: “It was the right show for the right time.

“It had beautiful people, beautiful clothes, beautiful sets, real flowers, real caviar, real anger behind the scenes from some of us,” she added.

The actress confessed she looks back fondly on her own luxury lifestyle at the time.

Explaining why she loved the 80s so much, Joan commented: “The 1980s was the ‘me’ decade.

“The markets were trading bonds with the bravado of Gordon Gekko.

“The stock market soared, obviously, and people were making a lot of money and investing it and living the good life,” she added, highlighting the American economy at the time.

The actress insisted she’s not ashamed about the lifestyle she enjoyed in the 80s.

“I don’t care what people say about it,” Joan remarked.

“I don’t care if they say it was all greed and Gordon Gekko. I loved Gordon Gekko and I miss it,” she told The Mirror.

Despite enjoying the luxuries of the 80s, Joan’s life hasn’t always been easy, something she speaks about in her new BBC documentary This Is Joan Collins.

In the film, the actress says: “I’ve had a lucky life. But I think I’ve also had my fair share of disaster and unhappiness.

“But who wants reality? There is already too much of it in today’s world and as they say in showbusiness, that’s not what the public pay for,” she added.

The series that shot Joan to fame is now getting a second outing as Dynasty was rebooted in 2017.

The remake of the 80s soap has seen huge success having aired 88 episodes across five seasons so far.

Joan’s iconic character, Alexis, is now portrayed by actress Elaine Hendrix.

This Is Joan Collins airs January 1 at 9pm on BBC2 and BBC iPlayer.
