Maid is airing on Netflix now and the insightful series has received critical acclaim for dealing with poignant topics. The TV drama follows desperate mother Alex (played by Margaret Qualley) as she fights to make a new life for herself and her daughter. Showrunner Molly Smith Metzler stayed in Greater Victoria, where the series is filmed, for nine months.

Maid was inspired by Stephanie Land’s memoir of the same name and it follows Alex, a domestic abuse survivor.

She managed to escape her emotionally abusive partner, Sean (Nick Robinson) but struggled to find somewhere for herself and her daughter to stay.

The series takes place in Washington, and it features the fictionalised Port Hampstead and Fisher Island.

Filming for the show actually took place in British Columbia, rather than Washington itself.

The cast and crew stayed in Greater Victoria for nine months due to Covid protocols.

Filming took place across Vancouver Island, with more than 160 areas featured in the series.

Some iconic spots include Greater Canadian Dollar Store in Sidney and Gordon Head Recreation Centre in Saanich.

Metzler said the location was a hidden gem and she loved it so much, she donated the majority of the wardrobe and sets to local organisations supporting women.

Those who benefitted from her kind gesture include the Women in Need Society and Victoria Women’s Transition House.

She told the Times Colonist the location had “everything you want when you’re shooting”.

She said she had the feeling of “being somewhere very warm and special” during the experience.

Victoria is also special to one of the show’s main stars, four-year-old Rylea Nevaeh Whittet, who plays Maddy.

She is from the area, which made filming amid the coronavirus pandemic much easier for her.

Vancouver Island CTV News shared a positive update saying the series had boosted the popularity of the area.

Sassy’s Family Restaurant in Brentwood Bay saw an uptake in reservations for a table featured for only a few seconds in the series.

Viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the filming locations, with Chloe saying: “#MAIDNetflix is a great show for plenty of reasons, which others have explored better than I can (cycle of abuse & broken system needs a light shone on it) but as a B plot I enjoyed playing Spot That Location since it was immediately evident the show was shot on Vancouver Island.”

LtotheMillsy said: “Although it’s very tough to watch —subject-wise — there is so much of #Sidney in MAID. Lovely to see my old stomping grounds. And the jail on Wilkinson, and so many other BC locations.”

Rita Chand added: “LOVING the new #Netflix series #MAIDNetflix shot entirely in Victoria. So fun to location spot but hot damn it’s a great series! Incredible performance by the actress playing Alex.”

Kelly Walker concluded: “I have just finished watching MAID on @netflix By far one of the most compelling series I have watched in years.

“Great writing, directing, cast and location. I could not have rooted for Alex more if I tried. Congratulations @stepville #MAIDNetflix.”

In the series, Alex takes up a cleaning job with clients based on Fisher Island and she is forced to travel a lot for work.

In the end, she gets accepted into college and leaves her hometown with Maddy to start a new life.

The locations in the series become characters in themselves as they play an important part in Alex’s working life.

Hopefully, fans will recognise the island in more of Metzler’s future projects.
