Mark Harmon will be taking on a reduced role for the new season of NCIS this year. Although it hasn’t been confirmed whether the iconic lead agent will be departing the CBS drama for good, a thrilling teaser trailer for next week’s episode has set off some alarm bells.

Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) could be walking right into a trap in the next episode of NCIS season 19.

As the series star has already been reported to be taking on a shortened role this time round, Gibbs could be tackling his last case before Harmon makes his permanent exit.

His hunt for an elusive serial killer has led him to ‘Tommy’ aka Paul Lemere (Jason Wiles), a contract killer who seems to have a vendetta against the suspended agent.

In the next episode, Lemere will lead Gibbs and newcomer Alden Parker (Gary Cole) to another body connected to the case.

A brand new trailer for next Monday’s instalment, ‘Road to Nowhere’, has teased what’s to come after the second episode’s shocking finish.

An official synopsis reads: “Gibbs and Parker go on a road trip to find one of the serial killer’s victims.

“Also, Agent Knight goes undercover at a large manufacturing company with ties to the murders.”

Plus, new forensic analyst Kasie Hines (Diana Reasonover) has given viewers cause for concern as she confirms Gibbs is nowhere to be found at one point in the episode.

She asks NCIS Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll): “Wait, Gibbs is missing again?”

Kasie then jokes: “Seriously, you need to put a bell around his neck.”

Her comments were especially sinister considering Gibbs could be left alone with the restrained killer.

Although Lemere remains in handcuffs throughout the trailer, a brief shot confirms Gibbs will take him aside for a tense one-on-one.

This could provide the killer the perfect opportunity to strike, taking down the ex-agent and going on the run once again.

Alternatively, Gibbs could find himself in Lemere’s clutches, once again isolated from his old team after his boat was rigged to explode at the end of season 18.

Down in the comments on YouTube, some concerned fans speculated whether episode three will be the beginning of the end of Gibbs’ long stint on NCIS.

Thomas McQuade said: “The longer this serial killer story goes on the more I deeply worry about Gibbs.

“We know Mark Harmon is going to have a reduced presence this season. I am beyond worried Gibbs might finally meet his end in the mid-season finale before the Christmas hiatus.”

Meanwhile, some fans on Reddit theorised along similar lines following rumours Gibbs would be appearing in no more than ten episodes this season.

User Fission-_-Chips said: “If you watched the ‘scenes from our next episode’ they mentioned Gibbs is missing again, so they’ll probably keep him off until later in the season.”

However, neither CBS nor showrunner Steven D. Binder has confirmed when Gibbs will be taking his absence.

The long-running agent could make himself scarce when the show takes its holiday break, but hopefully fans won’t have to say goodbye to the seasoned NCIS agent just yet.

NCIS season 19 continues Mondays on CBS.
