Neighbours is back! Streaming giant Amazon resurrects hit soap after shock axing

Popular Australian soap Neighbours is set for a triumphant return after being cancelled in July 2022, with streaming giant Amazon choosing to save the show.

The new series of Neighbours will begin filming in 2023 after production company Fremantle signed onto the project with Amazon Freevee.

Fan favourites, including Stefan Dennis as Paul Robinson, Alan Fletcher as Karl Kennedy, Jackie Woodburne as Susan Kennedy and Ryan Moloney as Toadie Rebecchi, are all set to return.

The show will be available on Amazon Freevee in the UK and U.S, with the platform also releasing thousands of previous episodes before the initial premiere.

Jason Herbison will maintain his job as the show's executive producer, a position he has held since 2013, alongside Andrew Thompson, who will also be returning as a producer.

Alongside the announcement, Amazon Freevee released a short teaser for the upcoming revival that featured some of the show's iconic locations like the Waterhole, Lassiters and The 82.

Reacting to the clip, one clearly excited fan wrote: "THIS IS THE GREATEST NEWS EVER!!!!!!"

"I. AM. HAPPY. SHOCKED!!! Best news ever!!!" another person wrote as a third added, "Thank you so much Freevee we love you!"

The show's final episode aired in July 2022 and saw previous stars return to the location once more for a final blowout, including Kylie Minogue, Guy Pearce, Jason Donovan, and Margot Robbie.

The finale was largely applauded for its sheer scale, with countless stars returning and many flashback scenes adding to the nostalgia.

One of the most hyped moments came when Kylie and Jason's characters, Charlene and Scott, returned to the street in their iconic green Mini as Especially for You blared from the speakers.

"Wow wow wow," said Scott as they climb out of the car, adding: "This is crazy. We made it eh?" And Charlene replied: "Home sweet home."

On the revival, Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD original content and programming at Amazon, said: “Neighbours has captivated its audience for nearly 40 years, building a dedicated and loyal following for the lives and stories of the characters on Ramsay Street.

“With the power of streaming, we’re able to offer a catalogue of thousands of Neighbours episodes for new audiences to discover this legendary series and current fans to relive their favorite moments.

"We look forward to immersing the audience in new Ramsay Street experiences when we relaunch the show next year for Amazon Freevee and Prime Video customers.”

“Neighbours is a unique series with a powerful connection with its fans across the world," said Jennifer Mullin, global CEO of Fremantle. "We cherish the show and all those who have been part of its incredible story over many decades, so we are thrilled that we have found a new home with Amazon Freevee.

"Thanks to the innovative Amazon Freevee platform, many classic episodes will be available to fans, and Neighbours will go back into full production in Australia early next year, providing our fans with new episodes,”
