Piers Morgan addresses ‘friend’ Kay Burley breaching coronavirus lockdown rules

Good Morning Britain 's Piers Morgan has addressed his 'friend Kay Burley' breaking lockdown rules.

The Sky News presenter has reportedly been axed from the show until 2021 after she breached lockdown rules for her 60th birthday party.

Addressing her rule break on air, Piers said: "I want to start with this – these are people we know, friends of ours, they're caught up in a story.

"And I think it's only reasonable that we should at least mention this, that over at Sky News Kay Burley, the morning show anchor, and Beth Rigby, the political editor, and various other members of the Sky News team, they have all been accused – it has been reported and hasn't been denied – that they broke the lockdown rules to celebrate Kay's 60th birthday.

"She's now been taken off air for an indeterminate amount of time. We're getting, rightly, asked why we're not commenting on this when it's one of our own, one of the media. Or do the rules not apply in reporting these things?"

"We're pretty tough on the politicians!", Susanna remarked.

Piers continued: "We should talk about this, even if they are friends of ours.

"My view would be – and I'm sure Kay's view would be if she was talking about this, which she isn't at the moment – is that we should be held to account, in my opinion.

"In exactly the way that we hold politicians to account because if we're going to hold people's feet to the fire, we've got to make sure that we live up to the same standards."

Kay apologised for breaking the rules on Twitter before Piers and Susanna discussed it on GMB.

Her statement read: "Evening everyone. On Saturday night I was enjoying my 60th birthday at a Covid compliant restaurant. I am embarrassed to say that later in the evening I inadvertently broke the rules."

"I had been waiting for a taxi at 11pm to get home. Desperate for the loo I briefly popped into another restaurant to spend a penny. I can only apologise", she added.
