Strictly Come Dancing’s Dan Walker lies down after high energy quickstep

Dan Walker was awarded 24 points in total for his quickstep as Strictly Come Dancing's first live show dazzled viewers.

Having given his all to the high octane routine, the 6 feet 6 inches tall broadcaster briefly collapsed on a replica BBC Breakfast sofa. He then sprung back up for the judges' enthusiastic feedback.

"What a first dance, you went for that," Tess Daly gushed.

"I have to be honest with you, I was a bit nervous about this, I thought you were gonna be awful," admitted Anton Du Beke. "But you were terrific!"

"I love your energy, you covered the floor. Brilliant."

Craig Revel-Horwood gave some technical critiques but then revealed: "I was pleasantly surprised."

Motsi Mabuse agreed, saying: "That was not a perfect quickstep, we all know that, but from the bottom of my heart, you risked something. You came out on the dancefloor, you gave it your best. This is the first week and if you keep that up and put everything back together, you are going to be a shining star!"

Head judge Shirley Ballas added: "You have some essential ingredients. You have the height, and I've never seen a neck that long, it's a HUGE asset when you're a dancer.

"You have very very long arms and very very long legs, so from Point A to Point B, the width, the volume, the prospect…unbelievable. Great power. Yes, you made a couple of mistakes, but you picked them up, you carried on and you made them work and that's professionalism!

Dan and Nadiya scored 24 points in total.

Dan also said that he now owes his dance partner Nadiya Bychkova a present.

Speaking backstage with Claudia Winkleman, Dan said: "I've spent most of my life terrified of dance floors because I'm tall and awkward.

"This amazing woman has enabled me to do that in just ten days' time, which is truly incredible.

"She deserves all the praise for me not looking like an idiot out there."

He added: "I said I'd get her a present if we got double figures, so I better sort that out."

Dan then joked that he has introduced Nadiya to the wonder of flapjacks.

Dan also sweetly dedicated his first performance on the show to former BBC Breakfast co-host Louise Minchin.

"She left last week, hopefully she's watching," said Dan.

"We miss you, we love you and wish you all the best away from the sofa."

Strictly Come Dancing continues at 6.45pm on Saturday on BBC One.
