This Morning’s Alison Hammond in stitches as comedian guest praises Dermot on coming out

Alison Hammond couldn’t stop laughing on This Morning on Friday after comedian Barry Humphries wrongly directed praise towards her co-host Dermot O’Leary for coming out.

The legendary Australian comedian was being interviewed by the ITV presenters when he decided to show his admiration for the 48-year-old – appearing to mistake him for Phillip Schofield.

“I’ve got a very good memory Dermot, a very good memory and incidentally I want to congratulate you by the way, seriously, on your courage,” Barry said on the couch.

Immediately, Alison sniggered as Dermot waited to hear what the comedian had to say next.

“Last year, no no, when he came out and told us about his sexuality.”

Following Barry’s comments, the whole studio erupted in laughter along with the This Morning co-hosts as it became clear the iconic funnyman was making a joke.

“No no, because I think a lot of people respected you for that,” he continued on with his misunderstood act.

“Thank you, I’ll pass that on to the gentleman who’s here Monday to Thursday,” Dermot replied referring to fellow presenter on the show Phillip Schofield.

“Thank you for your kind comments.”

“No your bravery was amazing,” Barry repeated, causing Alison to bend over in hysterics before looking at her co-host who found the whole bit equally hilarious.

The 87-year-old is well-known in the UK for portraying comedic character Dame Edna, whose typical appearance over the years has consisted of a bouffant purple wig, rosy made-up cheeks and over-the-top sunglasses.

Appearing on This Morning as himself, Barry proved to be even more funny outside of his signature stage persona, giving viewers just as much of a laugh as the presenters.

“Had me in absolute tears crying laughing couldn’t stop then Alison’s laugh was making me worse I was #Crying best medicine I’ve needed for a while bloody loved it @[email protected]@AlisonHammond Thank you,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“Screaming laughing at Barry Humphries on #thismorning, thanking Dermot for coming out! How Alison didn’t wet herself howling is beyond me,” a second said.

The comedian went down as a hit on the show, with those watching wanting to see more of Barry after his interview.

“Can Barry Humphries do one of the phone ins on #ThisMorning one day? Maybe sit in for Deidre or Vanessa,” one viewer added.

“#ThisMorning that Barry Humphries was so funny I’ve rewound the TV to watch again,” wrote another fan, while another stated:

“Barry is one of the best guests they have had on in ages. I’m in hysterics.”
