KANYE West is an American hip hop rapper, who has lately become more famous for his rants than his music.
But from 21 Grammy awards to six platinum albums and a lucrative clothing line, he’s made quite a career for himself. So, who is Kanye and how did he get so famous?
Born to rap
Kanye was born in Atlanta on June 7 1977 to Ray and Dondra West, who divorced when he was three-years-old.
He and his mother then moved to Chicago, where Kanye became involved in the hip hop scene from a young age.
The rapper started making music when he was 13 after he persuaded his mother to pay for him to use a recording studio.
When he was 15 he met hip-hop and R&B music producer No. I.D. who quickly became his mentor.
Kanye received a scholarship to Chicago's American Academy of Art but dropped out when he was 20 to pursue his music career.
Kanye started out in the music industry as a producer and got his first credits aged 19 when he produced some tracks for rapper Grav.
He then formed and became a member and producer of rap group the Go-Getters.
In the late Nineties he produced records for artists such as Foxy Brown and Harlem World before landing a job at Roc-A-Fella Records in 2000, where he was credited with helping to revitalise Jay-Z’s career because of his contributions to his influential 2001 album The Blueprint.
This raised Kanye’s profile and as an in-house producer for the label, he produced songs for artists such as Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson and Ludacris.
His big break
Despite being a successful producer, Kanye’s dream was to become a rapper but he struggled to get a record deal until the then-head of Roc-A-Fella signed him to the label, which was initially reluctant to take him on as an artist.
Then, after a near-fatal crash in 2002 which left him with a shattered jaw, he was inspired to write Through The Wire which would become his debut single and laid the foundations for his debut album The College Dropout.
What is Kanye's net worth?
Kanye West is reportedly worth $250 million, with the majority of his earnings coming from music, merchandise and touring.
In August, 2018, with the skyrocketing sales of the rapper's Yeezy shoe collection with Adidas, Market Watch claimed that Kanye was well on his way to becoming a billionaire by 2020.
The Yeezy brand itself is currently valued at close to $1.5 BILLION.
It was further mentioned that Kanye's T-shirts and hoodies were in such high demand when they went on sale in June, 2018 that over $500,000 worth of apparel was generated in just 30 minutes.
Clearly, the rapper knows that there's plenty of money to be made in fashion and merch.
Meanwhile, his wife Kim Kardashian is holding up just fine with her own net worth, which currently stands at $350 million.
What is Kanye West's latest song called?
During the second season premiere of Irv Gotti's BET anthology series Tales, Kanye West used the platform to debut a brand new track called Brothers.
The song features musical icon Charlie Wilson of The Gap Band, who he last collaborated with on No Mistakes in 2018.
Following the release of the full version, Irv had taken to Instagram, saying: "There is a lot of speculation right now on who is Kanye West rapping about on the song brothers".
"So here is the song. That BET cut off because of there way of airing episodes. But it was always meant for the audience to hear the whole record.
Listen. And decide for your self if you think Kanye is rapping about Jay Z or Virgil. Both Ye’s Brothers. And also let me know if you liked the episode and song. We did it for yall. My hip hop culture. -IG"
Two years later it was released and went to number two in the Billboard 200 and received near-universal critical acclaim and was voted the top album of the year by Rolling Stone magazine and won Best rap Album at the 2005 Grammys.
The following year he toured the world supporting U2 on their Vertigo Tour, which inspired his third album Graduation, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
Kanye went on to make five more critically-acclaimed albums, the most recent being The Life of Pablo which he released in 2016, and saw his first six LPs go platinum.
He has 21 Grammy Awards, three BRITs, five MTV awards, six MOBOs, two American Music awards and three NME awards.
Kanye has had many chart hits but his most recognised ones are probably Gold Digger featuring Jamie Foxx, Stronger, Niggas in Paris and FourFiveSeconds with Rihanna and Paul McCartney.
His other hits include:
- Bound 2
- Jesus Walks
- Love Lockdown
- N***** In Paris
- Hey Mama
- Real Friends
- Through the Wire
- New Slaves
- Touch The Sky
Does Kanye want to be US President?
On September 2, 2018 Kanye West claimed he was "seriously considering" running for president in 2024.
The 41-year-old made the comments during a radio interview in Chicago.
West first expressed his desire to get into the White House at the MTV Video Music Awards back in 2015.
Asked if he's still considering launching an election bid, he told Power 92: "Yes. It 100 percent could happen. 2024."
"If I decide to do it, it will be done. I’m not gonna try."
He also said being an entrepreneur has prepared him for the hot seat, adding: "You should not be president unless you've ran a multi-billion dollar business."
His lofty ambitions first came to light in 2015 when he was accepting a lifetime achievement award at the VMAs in Los Angeles, California.
He told the crowd: "As you probably could’ve guessed by this moment, I have decided, in 2020, to run for president."
Although admitting he did not know much about politics, he reckoned he was qualified because of his "view on humanity, on people and the truth".
What was his row with Drake about?
Kanye's most recent Twitter outburst began when he revealed Drake's team asked for permission to release a song they collaborated on.
Still reeling from Drake dissing his Yeezy 350 trainers on his track with French Montana, No Stylist, Kanye accused the star of "trying to take food out of his kids' mouths".
The two have been rowing for over a year, after Drake was convinced Kanye told his rival Pusha T about his secret son, leading to the latter releasing diss track outing Drizzy as a parent.
The Canadian rapper allegedly retaliated by insinuating that he'd slept with Kanye's wife Kim on his track In My Feelings, to which Kim waded in to warn him to "never threaten" Kanye.
The controversial rapper, 42, then hit out at Ariana Grande after she encouraged fans to ignore his feud with Drake and check out her new music instead.
