Where is the cast of Fawlty Towers now?

There may have been just 12 episodes of Fawlty Towers when it came out in the 1970s but it is still labelled as one of the best, given the amazing performances from its cast. So what happened to all of the stars of the classic comedy? Here’s everything you need to know about the cast of Fawlty Towers, 46 years after the show made its debut.

Where is the cast of Fawlty Towers now?

Basil Fawlty – John Cleese

Portraying the forever frustrated hotel owner Basil Fawlty was legendary actor and comedian John Cleese.

He was originally part of the comedy troupe Monty Python, before going off to do solo projects like Fawlty Towers.

After the comedy came to a close, Cleese focused on his film career, starring in A Fish Called Wanda, Clockwise and two Bond movies as both Q’s assistant and Q.

Some of his other projects have included the Harry Potter franchise, Will and Grace, Shrek, Hold the Sunset and The Naked Wanderer.

Cleese now lives with his wife Jennifer on the Caribbean island of Nevis.

He will be returning to TV for a special documentary on cancel culture, entitled Cancel Me.

The press release says that the documentary will delve into “why a new ‘woke’ generation is trying to rewrite the rules on what can and can’t be said”.

Cancel Me will air on Channel 4 but a release date hasn’t yet been set.

Sybil Fawlty – Prunella Scales

The actress behind Basil’s sassy wife Sybil was Prunella Scales who was in films such as Howard’s End and The Boys from Brazil after Fawlty Towers finished.

She was also nominated for a BAFTA for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in A Question of Attribution by Alan Bennett.

Scales is married to fellow actor Timothy West who filmed the Great Canal Journeys together on Channel 4 from 2014 to 2019.

Sadly, West stated last year that the pair had to quit the travel show as Scales’ Alzheimer’s was getting worse.

Manuel – Andrew Sachs

The victim of most of Basil’s outbursts was lovable Spanish waiter Manuel.

He was played by actor Andrew Sachs who went on to star in There Comes A Time, Big Bag, Doctor Who: Shada, That Peter Kay Thing and Coronation Street.

Sachs was in a media storm back in 2008 when radio hosts Russell Brand Jonathan Ross prank called him, leaving messages about Brand having sex with his granddaughter Georgina Baillie.

This led to an apology from the BBC, Brand resigning and Ross being suspended.

Sachs was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2012 and he sadly died four years later.

Polly Sherman – Connie Booth

Booth co-wrote Fawlty Towers with Cleese who she was married to at the time and starred in the show as chambermaid Polly.

Cleese and Booth married in 1968 and had daughter Cynthia together but they had divorced by the time filming began on season two of Fawlty Towers.

She went on to appear in The Tomorrow People and The Buccaneers but later decided to retrain as a psychotherapist.

Fawlty Towers is available to watch on Dave.
