Maid has been airing on Netflix and the emotional series has grabbed the attention of viewers across the globe. The eye-opening TV drama tells the story of desperate mother Alex (played by Margaret Qualley) as she attempts to make a new life for herself and her daughter. Fans are keen to know whether Alex will return in a second season and Express.co.uk has all you need to know.
Will there be another series of Maid on Netflix?
Maid has continued to receive critical acclaim since it landed on Netflix as it highlights the impact of domestic abuse.
In the series, viewers learn how Alex has been emotionally abused by her alcohol-dependent partner, Sean (Nick Robinson), and she tried to escape.
With nowhere to go, she took up a job as a maid in order to earn enough cash to buy her own home for herself and her daughter.
Sadly, along the way, she is continuously let down by the system and finds herself in a domestic abuse shelter.
All the while, she is in an ongoing custody battle as Sean was keen to have full custody of their child following Alex’s car crash.
In the end, it was Alex who was able to find a way out and start her own cleaning business.
From this, she was able to gain late entry into college to study creative writing, and she was able to take her daughter Maddy (Rylea Nevaeh Whittet) with her.
The series ended on a happy note as Sean came to realise what was best for his daughter.
But this has led fans to wonder whether there is scope for a second season, as the show has become hugely popular.
Sadly there is no word of a season two, as the storyline seemed to come to a satisfying and fulfilling end.
As most of the characters’ story arcs were wrapped up, it would be difficult to anticipate where a second season would go.
The series is based on the memoir by Stephanie Land, so there is more source material to work with, providing it has not been exhausted already.
Netflix is yet to decide whether it will renew the series, but it is unlikely given its nature as a limited series.
As is the case with most limited series, there is no intention to continue the story across a number of seasons.
With Alex getting the outcome she had always wanted, there is not much story left to tell.
If the series was revived for another season, it could focus on Alex and Maddy’s new life away from their previous home.
As it was just the two of them making the trip to Alex’s university, it would be interesting to see how they cope without a family network.
Although, Alex was always known for being an independent character who was not keen on relying on her family for support.
She had turbulent relationships with both her mother and father and would often choose to tackle obstacles alone.
Speaking to Elle about what she hoped audiences would take away from the series, she said: “I hope everyone has their own unique experience with it.
“For me, the thing that resonated the most was the exploration of mother-daughter relationships.
“I’ll certainly take away with me forever the experience of working with my mom, and Rylea, too.
“It was the kind of thing that will be with me for life.”
The series has been praised for its stark and unapologetic approach to real-life issues that were handled in a sensitive, yet creative way.
Maid is streaming on Netflix now.
