Dolly Parton opens up about ‘making a mistake’ when meeting the Queen

Dolly Parton paid a touching tribute to the Queen and even described the moment she met the late monarch as "one of the highlights" of her whole life.

The American singer appeared on The One Show on Friday evening and was asked to reflect on her royal meeting as presenters Alex Jones and Roman Kemp pried her for information.

Her encounter came in 1977 when she sang at the Royal Variety Performance. Alex prompted the 76 year old by asking: "They didn't tell you that you were going to meet the Queen did they?"

Speaking from a video link in Nashville, Dolly replied: "I know, I got to meet the Queen!"

Discussing the moment, Dolly admitted that she was keen to avoid any mistakes, she continued: "I was so excited about that but so nervous because you don't want to make a mistake – being a country girl and all.

"But, she was so warm and wonderful and made me feel special and that was one of the highlights of my whole life and I have a picture sitting on my dresser of me with the Queen."

Alex then asked about Dolly's sweet tribute to the Queen after her death in September.

Dolly replied: "Well I loved her grace, her style like everyone else and you know, she just shined to everybody.

"I think she was more than just the Queen and not just to say that but she was someone you felt like you knew."

She continued: "A lot of light went out around the world when she left us. But she's still around."

Fellow guest Gregory Porter starred at this year's Royal Variety Performance and told the presenters his duet with actor Rita Wilson was all due to The One Show.

Gregory explained how a chance meeting in the studio with Rita's husband Tom Hanks led to the unlikely duet.

"Well, it's been some years ago that I was performing outside and Tom Hanks was here and he heard me. After the show he said, 'Can I get your name and let me know where I can find your music.' So I did that.

"Apparently the last few years he's been playing me in the house and his wife Rita heard and she became a fan and when she had a performance that she was doing at the Royal Variety she invited me."

He added: "So the whole reason for me being here this time was down to The One Show."

Alex then joked to her co-host Roman that they "should have taken a cut." Roman replied: "We could put him together with Dolly Parton now which would be quite tempting."
