A guitar signed by rock legends such as Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Pete Townshend, sold for $28,800 at an auction held recently in Wiltshire, U.K., to raise money to help ailing folk-rock guitarist Jerry Donahue.
Several other stars, including Robert Plant, David Gilmour, Brian Wilson, Mark Knopfler, Jeff Beck, Jeff Lynne, John Paul Jones, Tony Iommi, Al Jardine, Steve Winwood, Al Stewart and Martin Barre also autographed the Donahue model Telecaster.
Donahue, who was born on September 24, 1946 in Manhattan, suffered a stroke July 29, 2016 and remains disabled, having difficulty with mobility and speech.
The guitarist was part of folk-rock bands Fairport Convention and Fotheringay in the 1970s.
He also recorded with artists including Plant, Elton John, The Beach Boys, Gerry Rafferty, Gary Wright, Warren Zevon, Bonnie Raitt, Roy Orbison and The Yardbirds.
The proceeds from the sale of the guitar will help fund Donahue’s rehabilitation and bring him as far back to his normal self as possible.
The JHS Vintage Reissued Series V58JD Jerry Donahue signature electric guitar, serial no. M201706254, was expected to fetch between about $12,800 and $25,700 at the auction.
