Megan Fox is well-known for movies like Transformers and Jennifer’s Body, films that play to the male gaze. Behind the scenes, however, Fox is an ardent feminist and lives by her own code of ethics — a code that has defined her life since her earliest, difficult years in Hollywood. It hasn’t always been easy for Fox to handle herself in the spotlight so easily. In fact, the actress suffered at the hands of the media for years and often felt compelled to dispel others’ perceptions about her. In a recent interview, Fox opened up about the moment that she knew she had to take her fate into her own hands – and how she feels about the media’s glare these days.
Megan Fox was a major paparazzi target in the early 2000s
Megan Fox first burst onto the Hollywood scene in the 2007 action film Transformers, although she had been acting on and off for several years prior to that, mostly in small television roles. Fox’s beauty and stunning sensuality made her an instant star, and fans all around the world clamored for more. In the years that followed her breakthrough role, she appeared in several high-profile movies, establishing herself as a sex symbol.
Fox’s experience as a young star was far from easy, however. She was judged by critics for seemingly making a living off of her looks, facing objectification by the media at every turn. She was even publicly fired from the Transformers franchise after her displeasure with director Michael Bay went public, with several people associated with the production slamming Fox to the media. Fox didn’t open up about the mistreatment that she received by Hollywood bigwigs until much later, however, going through much of the torment in relative silence.
What was Fox’s ‘incredible breakthrough’ moment?
For many years, Megan Fox was able to lean on her longtime partner and the father of her three young boys, Brian Austin Green, for support and encouragement — as well as the belief system that she adopted as a means of self-protection. However, in early 2020, Fox and Green announced that they were divorcing, leaving Fox to confront her demons on her own. As Fox later revealed to InStyle Magazine in a July 2021 interview, it was around this time that she had a life-changing experience.
“I took all my crystals, and I set up my little temple inside my room. I turned on this massive TV, and Jonah Hex was on, which got panned in the press. It was supposed to be terrible,” Fox detailed. “I had this incredible breakthrough, and I realized that I had been living in a self-imposed prison for so long because I let other people tell me who I was or what I wasn’t. I hid because I was hurt.”
Megan Fox is currently living her best life
Megan Fox told InStyle Magazine that after her “incredible breakthrough,” her whole life changed for the better. “I got a divorce and I started working more and doing more things. I ended up meeting Colson, and then literally everything exploded from there,” the star said. While Fox still battles things like mom-shaming, the actress has also become more open about the things that bother her — and with the support of her boyfriend, Machine Gun Kelly, aka Colson Baker, Fox has everything that she needs to take on Hollywood with the strength that is quickly becoming her defining trait.
For fans, it is a joy to see Fox back at work in the entertainment business, working on projects that excite her. With several high-profile movies in 2021, including Till Death and Midnight in the Switchgrass, it seems fair to say that Fox’s resurgence is well underway.
