Pirates of the Caribbean has gone down in history as one of the most influential and successful brands in cinematic history – a huge win for Disney. This is largely down to the incredible portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow by Johnny Depp.
Over the years a lot of controversy has grown around Depp and his acting habits.
Rumours plagued the latest film – Salazar’s Revenge – that Depp had to be fed lines though an earpiece to keep him involved with the film.
Now, fans know Depp is working hard during a court case against a British newspaper with a case involving his ex-wife Amber Heard.
But fans may not know Depp has displayed a huge amount of generosity and genuine compassion over the years.
During the filming of the 2011’s On Stranger Tides, Depp displayed one of these examples of compassion and kindness to the entirety of the film’s crew.
According to The Things, the conditions of On Stranger Tides were quite treacherous.
Over the course of the elaborate film the cast and crew were constantly getting wet and splashed during filming and production.
Because of this, Depp reportedly purchased waterproof jackets for 500 cast and crew members so they would all be protected from the horrifically wet conditions.
What’s more, he bought all of these jackets out of his own pocket, racking up a hefty sum.
The publication claims Depp spent upwards of $60,000 just to keep the people around him safe and dry.
Not bad for someone who was supposedly plagued with issues throughout the first film’s production.
During an interview back in 2015 with E! Online, Depp explained how he felt like he was going to get fired from the set of Curse of the Black Pearl.

He explained: “Yeah, they wanted to fire me.
“It trickled back to me that [Disney CEO] Michael Eisner went on some sort of bent about how ‘Goddamnit Johnny Depp’s ruining the film!
“‘Is it drunk? Is it gay?’ So I fully expected to be fired.”
He added that another executive eventually confronted him over his eccentric performance, asking: “What the f**k are you doing?”
Depp then allegedly went on to reply: “I said: ‘Well don’t you know all my characters are gay?’
“I really expected to be fired, but I wasn’t for some reason.
“They were actually gonna put subtitles under my character, they couldn’t understand Captain Jack.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is available to watch on Disney Plus.
