Soap star Jane has teased another plot for the Winter-Brown family as Christmas edges closer to the streets of Weatherfield in Coronation Street. The plot twist will follow Bernie’s lookalike storyline which has seen Fern Lindon (played by Gabrielle Claister) rob thousands of pounds’ worth of jewellery while posing as Bernie.
The actress, who has appeared in the ITV staple since 2019, confirmed earlier this month that the ongoing storyline will be coming to an end soon.
Speaking to TV Times Magazine, Jane revealed “times are tough” for the WInter-Brown family.
She said: “There are a lot of pennies to find to keep that house warm and those babies fed.
“There will continue to be financial worries for the Winter-Browns, especially with Christmas coming up.”
Bernie, who is the mother of established characters Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and Paul Foreman (Peter Ash), mentioned how she’d love the soap to introduce Gemma and Paul’s father into the storyline.
“I’d love to know who he was,” she said, admitting that “he could be anyone”.
While a storyline like this could open more doors to Bernie’s past, it could also add some friction to her on-off relationship with Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin).
The soap star explained: “What I love about Bernie is that in the flick of a coin, she’s going down a road she shouldn’t have gone down, and embracing it in all of her tie-dye.”
As the lookalike storyline draws to a close, this could be the latest plot twist in the character’s development.
“I don’t know what the writers have planned for Bernie and Dev,” Jane admitted.
“I’d like to think they can go the distance, because I have a ball working with Jimmi.”
Having been billed as “an old raver who stills sees herself as a free spirit” by ITV bosses, Jane admits she’d like to see some of this backstory introduced.
Speaking about the introduction of Gemma and Paul’s Dad in the show, Jane said: “I like to think she met him at Glastonbury.”
Having struggled as a parent to Gemma and Paul, this new character could spark fresh feuds within the family and bring more drama to the beloved cobbles.
Jane was involved in the creation of the lookalike plot having previously mentioned to a Corrie writer that she’s often mistaken for co-star Gabrielle Glaister, who plays Fern. Of the plot, Jane said: “It’s been so much fun, I’m a bit sad that it’s coming to an end.”
The lookalike storyline concluded last week with a final confrontation between Bernie and Fern.
Having been advised the only chance of avoiding prison would be for Bernie to plead guilty, Bernie, along with Gemma and Dev tricked Fern into thinking she was meeting up with ex-husband Howard Lindon (Gordon Peaston).
Fern showed up with the jewellery, only to be confronted by Bernie and the others.
Fern was arrested shortly after by Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) with the case being adjourned.
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV.
