EastEnders star Max Bowden has revealed that while he doesn’t particularly like Ben Mitchell all of the time, he does ‘understand’ him.
The actor — who portrays Ben in the BBC One soap — revealed all in scenes which viewers can see for themselves in Monday night’s episode of Secrets From The Square.
Speaking to Stacey Dooley about his character, Max said: ‘I don’t like Ben. I am angry at Ben a lot of the time.
‘I find his decisions and the choices that he makes infuriating. But I understand him.
‘I think there’s a very very fine line between the two.’
Ben has continuously found himself divided between the person he wants to be, and the person he thinks his dad Phil (Steve McFadden) wants him to be, which has resulted in a lot of inner conflict — which has provided Max with plenty of opportunity thrive in the role.
One of the character’s most memorable scenes — which Max, Stacey and co-star Tony Clay discuss in the episode — is the scene in which Ben first comes to suspect that Callum might be gay.
On this particular scene, Max said: ‘In that moment, he [Ben] was looking at himself.
‘He was seeing elements of Callum’s disguise, and he’s seen it all before.
‘He wants to be able to allow Callum to not go through what Ben went through, and to have to keep it hidden for too much longer.’
With EastEnders having had to shut down production amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the soap has gone off the air.
Filming has resumed, and EastEnders will return later in the year, but in the meantime, Secrets From The Square — and the iconic episodes — will give fans their Walford fix.
One to watch: Monday 13 July at 8pm on BBC One
