End of an era as Ian Beale exits EastEnders in devastating scenes

Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) bid farewell in EastEnders tonight (January 22), as he left Walford after making the devastating discovery that Sharon (Letitia Dean) had tried to kill him.

Ian already had suspicions that Sharon was behind his mystery illness, after Max Branning (Jake Wood) made some strong accusations.

However, after taking a call from his doctor — a call in which he learned that there was reason to be concerned regarding his blood test results — he started to realise that Sharon was, in fact, trying to murder him.

Sharon served up his poisoned cuisine, and Ian stalled — much to her dismay.

Having realised just how far she was willing to take this, he finally confronted her — accusing her of attempting to kill him.

Sharon came clean, and played Dennis Rickman’s (Bleu Landau) voicemail once more so that he could hear for himself the young lad’s final words.

Ian broke down and revealed that he tried to save Dennis, but Sharon was having none of it.

Devastated, Ian decided he’d finish the job for her, and therefore he started eating from the poisoned dish.

Sharon encouraged him, but ultimately came to her senses, and made him stop — before encouraging him to vomit up what he had already taken.

She confirmed that she’d be leaving Walford, but Ian attempted to make her stay.

However, he ultimately decided to leave himself, and therefore took one final look around Walford, before heading off to the tube station.

Actor Adam Woodyatt is taking a break from the BBC One soap, so Ian will be back at some point in the future.

EastEnders continues Monday January 25 at 8:05pm on BBC One.
