For nine seasons, workers at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company entertained viewers with their zany antics and workplace drama. The NBC television sitcom series The Office started in 2005, with the last episode airing in 2013. The long-lasting series utilized a unique mockumentary style of storytelling that has since been replaced by reality television.
When The Office doors closed for the final time, viewers were left wondering what was to become of fan-favorite characters Pam (Jenna Fischer), Jim (John Krasinski), and Dwight (Rainn Wilson). Here is a quick recap of what happened to The Office workers from Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Steve Carell was always the leader of the pack
Without Steve Carell, who played office manager Michael Scott, there would not be The Office. His wit, charisma, and inane ability to prank his co-workers made the show a pop culture phenomenon.
At the end of season 7, Carell decided to leave the show to spend more time with his family. According to Parade, filming the final episode “Goodbye, Michael” was “emotional torture” for the comedian. In a podcast interview, Krasinski said:
“It felt like the end of an era. It felt like the end of something more than even losing Steve or losing Michael, it felt like the end of our show … It’s like when you graduate college, your life isn’t over, but that version of your life will never come back.”
‘The Office’ romance between Pam and Jim?
Fans always rooted for Pam and Jim to get together, and when they finally got married in Season 6, viewers were delighted. The addition of their children, Cecilia and Philip, was the icing on the cake for television’s most captivating couple.
The Hollywood Reporter explained that as the award-winning show concluded, Pam decided to sell her family’s Scranton home so Jim could chase his dreams of becoming a sports marketing executive. While many fans believed they were heading for divorce, the couple pulled it together and moved to Austin, Texas, for Jim’s career.
According to Screen Rant, rumors of a reboot have been happening for years, with fans anxious to know the final fate of Pam and Jim. While both Krasinski and Fischer have expressed interest in returning to The Office, there are no set plans from NBC for the series to return at this time.
After the show ended in 2013, Krasinski went on to star in the Jack Ryan series on Amazon. He also appeared in and directed the movie A Quiet Place in 2018. Fisher co-starred on an ABC sitcom Splitting Up Together and worked on several other ongoing projects.
What happened to Dwight?
Dwight, the ultimate loner, ended up getting married to Angela in the last season of The Office. The once awkward office assistant finished the long-running series at the top of his game. He not only became a father but the regional manager of Dunder Mifflin, as well.
According to IBT, Dwight goes on a firing spree, letting go of Kevin and Toby, using “cake to break the news to them.” He also fired Pam and Jim so they could receive severance pay. Creed, who tried to fake his own death, ends the series in handcuffs while Oscar decides to run for Senate. Stanley retires with plans to move to Florida City.
Andy is now working in the Cornell University admissions office, after his 15 minutes of fame with a viral Acapella video. Nellie unfriends Toby on Facebook, and he moves to New York to publish a book. Kelly and Ryan also attend the wedding, with Ryan explaining that he now has a baby.
One of the most memorable lines of the final episode was when Michael makes a surprise cameo at the wedding ceremony. When Dwight said, “I can’t believe you came,” Michael responds with his trademark line, “That’s what she said.”
