Endeavour is back for its eighth season on ITV. The Inspector Morse prequel continued to grow in popularity since it first premiered, but all good things must come to an end. After eight seasons, some fans are worried this is the last time they will see Endeavour Morse (played by Shaun Evans) and Fred Thursday (Roger Allam) take to the streets of Oxford.

Is Endeavour season 8 the final series?

Since debuting in 2021, Endeavour has been charting the early years of Detective Inspector Endeavour Morse.

Acting as a prequel to the original series of Inspector Morse, which ran from 1987 to 2000, Endeavour has always had a time limit by its very nature.

Since season one, fans have got to meet a far younger, less experienced Morse, one that is gradually becoming the iconic character first portrayed by John Thaw.

As Endeavour is in its ninth year, some fans are preparing themselves for the inevitable end of the beloved series.

However, it looks certain that season eight will not be the last for the show, as ITV has not made any announcements on whether this batch of episodes will conclude the story.

This also aligns with what stars Shaun Evans and Roger Allam have alluded to, hinting that there is still more story to be told.

Speaking to BT TV, Evans explained: “In the original series I think John Thaw called it and it was like, ‘This is enough now.’

“I think we’ll know when the time has come to end Endeavour. It’s incredible that we’ve got to 33 films.

“I don’t think any of us expected that or anticipated it. But you want to do it until the story is told.”

As Evans mentioned, season eight will bring the show up to 33 episodes, the same number of episodes Inspector Morse achieved by 2000.

If it does continue past season eight, it will mean it is the longest-running show in the franchise, which also includes the sequel Lewis.

While officially unconfirmed by ITV, Allam also teased the potential for more on the morning show Lorraine.

“What can I say? I think it’s unlikely that this will be the last,” Allam admitted.

ITV has not released a statement about the future of Endeavour, though confirmation will likely come following season eight’s conclusion.

There will be three episodes in season eight, each airing on Sundays until September 26.

This is similar to season seven, which also had three feature-length episodes.

Now that season eight has premiered, viewers have been sharing their thoughts on the first episode in over a year.

One fan commented: “I think John Thaw would have been very proud…”

Another wrote: “Love Endeavour and Fred Thursday amazing telly but Morse will always be best!”

A third added: “I see that Shaun Evans is multitasking tonight; Vigil & Endeavour!”

Endeavour season eight continues Sundays at 8pm on ITV.
