ITV series Marcella made a comeback for another outing recently with Anna Friel reprising her role as the disturbed detective. Season three has been airing weekly as well as being dropped on the ITV Hub as a boxset for viewers to binge. Express.co.uk spoke to Marcella creator Hans Rosenfeldt exclusively as well as lead star Friel about their thoughts on the future of the series.
Will there be another series of Marcella?
Rosenfeldt exclusively told Express.co.uk he always planned to round off Marcella as a trilogy, nonetheless, he hasn’t closed the door completely on the series.
He said about revisiting Marcella five or 10 years down the line, saying: “Yeah we could. Why not? I think that would be a lot of fun as well.”
The Bridge creator went on to say: “And it was not like it was in season two. It’s not obvious where we should go with her in a possible series four.
“It will demand some thinking to get her back into doing whatever we want her to do, so I’m quite done with her at the moment. But you should never close the door completely.”
While Friel told media including Express.co.uk: “It was always meant to be a trilogy as Hans will tell you. Hans will aim for it to be that way.”
She went on to tease the ending of season three, saying: “Some people might say it’s happy and some might disagree. I know that sounds very confusing and contradictory.
“I think it’s a happy ending but there’s definitely room for it to continue to grow. I don’t think we’re at that stage yet.
“I know that it’s been really well received in all the 32 countries it’s aired in and a lot of them started on season three and went back to one and two.”
Reflecting on whether she would revisit the character in the future, Friel said: “I love Marcella. I’m very attached to the her.
“I think it would take lots of discussions to say, ‘What now can we do with her?’
“It’s better to have three really strong series than a weaker one if someone came up with a really good idea as to where it could go… I could see her in South America.”
Friel admitted she missed the police station in Marcella, saying she wouldn’t be able to drive past on the M40 without thinking of Marcella.

Both Rosenfeldt and Friel’s words suggest it’s curtains for Marcella now but there could be something in the future should the writing be strong enough.
Rosenfeldt is now working on other projects including writing novels for the past 18 months.
His first novel When Crying Wolf was published in September 2020 and he’s also been writing other crime books with another colleague which is slated for release in April this year.
Additionally, he’s working on a new TV project with the pilot shooting in about a year’s time but couldn’t say too much.
He teased: “It’s very hush-hush at the moment but it’s not a crime show. For the first time ever basically.
“It was definitely a step out of my comfort zone but it’s into another zone I’m really comfortable in.”
He continued: “Let me say this much, it’s not a romcom. I think that will probably be the worst for me to write.
“So it’s not that but it’s something else I’m quite happy with moving into.”
