Queen of the South fans have been gripped for the past five years, watching Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga) grow from a poor money changer to one of the most successful drug queenpins in the world. Sadly, it was time to say goodbye to Teresa and her crew yesterday, Wednesday, June 9, as the drama showed its final ever episode. However, according to its creators, it wasn’t always the plan to end with just five series.

In March 2021, USA Network announced the premiere date for season five of Queen of the South.
But at the same time, it was revealed the drug drama had been cancelled and series five would be its last.
Fans from across the world were disappointed knowing there would be no more adventures featuring Teresa, Pote Galvez (Hemky Madera), James Valdez (Peter Gadiot) and Kelly Anne Van Awken (Molly Burnett).
Showrunners Benjamin Lobato and Dailyn Rodriguez have since disclosed that they had intended on a sixth season.
Speaking to Deadline, the pair even said how they left a potential loose end in the season five finale so there would be an opportunity for more episodes.
Rodgriguez explained: “One of the reasons we did choose not to kill Devon Finch was the possibility of a season six, and leaving that doubt a little bit out there.
“We did toy with the idea of keeping that open, but once we finally got the word that we were not getting a season six, we decided to just let sleeping dogs lie when it came to Devon Finch.”
Lobato went on to say they had written a scene where Devon did get his hands on evidence which proved Teresa was still alive but was shot by James to ensure the truth never got out.
But he said they wanted to focus more on the “emotion” of the ending rather than the downfall of Devon.
Going by Lobato’s comments on where the final scene was filmed, it sounds like he is still holding onto the possibility of a series six.
He said: “We wanted to go to Marbella, but because of COVID restrictions, we were unable to travel.
“We had to find something near our production offices in Louisiana, and we ended up on the gulf shores of Alabama.
“It was a nod to the book. If we can get her to Marbella, Spain, and if there was a season six, then we would basically reboot the show, and really dig in and start doing more of what the book did.”

Officially though, there has been no talk of Queen of the South coming back.
The announcement was made earlier this year by USA Network, declaring series five to be the final season.
Nevertheless, if the creators are up for making more episodes in the future, then there is always a chance that it could return, given its international fanbase.
But this would mean unravelling the crew’s happy ending from the series five finale.
Queen of the South had a three-year time jump where Pote got out of prison and met his daughter Lana for the first time.
He was reunited with Kelly Anne as well as James and Teresa who had been in hiding.
They had all been in on the plan for her to fake her death in order for them all to escape the drug life they had found themselves in.
The finale ended with the gang sat around a table, ready to eat dinner like a normal family.
Queen of the South is available to watch on USA Network and Netflix.
