It’s a story that has stirred debate and controversy long before it’s even aired and there are set to be agonising scenes in Emmerdale as Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) and Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) reach the painful decision to end their pregnancy after it is confirmed that their unborn baby will have Down’s Syndrome.
The couple were previously warned of complications and they opted to risk a CVS test to see what it would show.
And when they get the results, there are some hard discussions to have around their capabilities of bringing the child into the world and how they would manage.
With debates raging on both sides of the side, it’s a risky story for Emmerdale to tell and the scenes won’t shy away from how difficult the choice will be for Laurel and Jai.
Laurel ends up opening up to Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry), who has a son Leo with Down’s Syndrome and Rhona gives her side of it – she loves Leo and wouldn’t change him for the world.
Rhona is left feeling angry and vulnerable when she learns that Laurel is considering terminating the pregnancy and she lashes out at her friend for putting her in such a position.
As Rhona reflects with Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) on how lucky they are to have Leo and how happy he makes them, across the village, Laurel and Jai are crushed under the weight of the decision as they come to realise they are on the same page.
Their choice made, how will the pair cope in the aftermath and will they have regrets? And how will Rhona feel towards Laurel when she finds out what their choice is?
