Where the EastEnders Moon family is now from career changes to bankruptcy hell

The Moon's have been a permanent EastEnders fixture for the past 18 years with a new generation of children now growing up in the square.

Cheeky chappy Alfie Moon, played by Shane Richie, first burst onto Albert Square in 2002 and the rest of his family have followed over the years.

He soon became landlord of The Queen Vic and found love in local loud-mouth Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace).

But it hasn't always been smooth sailing for the Moon clan with affairs, money-troubles and death landing at their door over the years.

Who could forget the heartbreaking scenes of Alfie saying goodbye to his beloved Nana Moon in 2005?

There may not be many Moons left in Albert Square but the family legacy will go down in soap history.

Daily Star has taken a sneak peek at what some of the Moon men have been up to since leaving Walford.

Alfie Moon (played by Shane Richie)

Shane Richie made his debut as Alfie Moon back in 2002.

The iconic character has appeared in the soap on and off for the past 18 years and his estranged wife Kat and children Tommy, Ernie and Bert still live in Albert Square.

Some of the character's more prominent storylines include his turbulent relationship with Kat, believing that Kat's son Tommy had died of cot death, and reuniting with Kat until they split again when she discovered that he was the father of her cousin Hayley's (Katie Jarvis) baby daughter Cherry.

An Eastenders spin-off show called Kat and Alfie: Redwater was created in 2017 due to the popularity of the lovebirds.

Alfie fled Albert Square in 2019 when he got on the wrong side of hard man Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden).

He texted Kat at the time saying he'll be returning soon but fans are still waiting to see Alfie back in Walford.

Since leaving the show, the comedian has appeared in several pantomime productions and he even signed with East West Records and released his debut country music album, A Country Soul, on November 10, 2017.

Telly favourite Shane, now 56, is one of the 12 famous faces appearing in the latest series of I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!

During his time in the Welsh castle, the star has admitted that the soap saved him from going bankrupt.

Spencer Moon (played Christopher Parker)

Christopher Parker played Alfie's younger brother Spencer Moon from 2002 until 2005.

The teen heartthrob departed Walford when Alfie sent him to live with his cousin in Australia.

During his time on EastEnders, Christopher appeared in the first series of Strictly Come Dancing and made it through to the final alongside his partner Hanna Karttunen.

In 2005, Chris broke his silence on his attempted suicide attempted the year before.

He told OK! Magazine at the time that he tried to end his life after a woman claimed he had lied about a relationship to hide his sexuality.

He said the gay rumours were false and had made him out to be a liar.

The actor was discovered by two of his friends who found him struggling to breathe after losing four pints of blood.

He was taken to hospital where he received stitches and was told he had done no lasting damage to his body.

For two years, Chris took his TV pursuits to the US, where he worked for TMZ and hosted Dead Famous Live alongside Gail Porter in Los Angeles.

Nowawdays, Chris' Twitter bio says he's a media solicitor and broadcaster.

Eddie Moon (played by David Essex)

EastEnders fans were left with their mouths wide open when international superstar David Essex OBE arrived in Walford as Alfie's uncle Eddie Moon in 2011.

Along with his children Michael, Tyler and Anthony, Eddie was introduced to bring a "new generation" of the Moon family.

David began filming in April 2011 and Eddie was last seen in Albert Square in October the same year.

The soap explored Eddie's strained relationship with son Michael because Michael blamed his father for the death of his mother.

Since leaving EastEnders, David, now 73, wrote the music score for the film Traveller in which he co-starred with his son Billy Cook, who played the main role as a half-gypsy trying to find his identity.

Since the 1970s, singer-songwriter David has attained 19 Top 40 singles in the UK and 16 Top 40 albums.

Fans can catch David on the road in 2021 with his latest tour where he'll perform his much-loved hits spanning over his entire repertoire – pandemic allowing!

Michael Moon (played by Steve John Shephard)

Michael Moon, the second cousin once removed of Alfie, was played by Steve John Shepherd from 2010 until 2013.

He was a charmer with an eye for the ladies, but was willing to stab anyone in the back.

Michael was murdered by his estranged wife Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) after their turbulent relationship took a sour turn.

Just a year after leaving the soap, John suffered a serious internal haemorrhage, losing nearly seven units of blood and being wheeled into an ambulance in front of his young children.

Speaking to the Evening Standard in 2014, the actor explained: "They saw me convulsing on the floor.

"They are resilient so I’m sure they will be fine but they did see it, which was awful. They seem to be processing it better than me.

"The A&E doctor on duty the night I came in was quite certain I wasn’t going to make it."

Steve, now 47, has gone on to play theatre roles since his stint in Albert Square.

Anthony Moon (played by Matt Lapinskas)

Matt Lapinskas has swapped Walford for a construction site and owns a building company.

The actor played the cheeky chappy in the BBC soap from 2011 to 2012 and is also known for his stint on 2013's Dancing On Ice alongside skating pro Brianne Delcourt.

Matt, now 31, has revealed he has his own building firm called Brightside Builders.

Speaking on his building firm's Instagram Story this week, the soap star beamed: "So guys if you're looking for any work being done at your property then don't hesitate to give us a message and enquire.

"Happy to come around and give you a free quote.

"And also stay happy guys enjoy life and yeah keep it real, Sunday, happy day, all day."

Matt famously dated his EastEnders co-star Shona McGarty, who plays Whitney Dean, but the pair split while he participated in Dancing on Ice.

Since leaving the soap, Matt has starred in films The Seven and Dead Ringer.

Tyler Moon (played by Tony Discipline)

Tony Discipline, best known for playing Tyler Moon from 2011 to 2013, surprised his social media followers when he shared a snap of himself in his firefighter uniform earlier this year.

The hunky actor, now 31 years of age, shared a snap of himself in front of a fire engine wearing hi-vis trousers and a red London Fire Brigade t-shirt.

The ex-soap star originally revealed his career change from actor to firefighter to his 10,400 Instagram followers back in March.

Many fans originally thought he was dressed as a character for a new role but the soap star has since revealed he's now a fireman.

Tony previously dated his EastEnders co-star Jacqueline Jossa but the couple split in 2013.

Tyler left his life in Albert Square to work with his brother Anthony in 2013.

Speaking to Inside Soap in 2017, Tony said he was open to returning to the long-running show as Alfie Moon's cousin.

Speaking at the time: he said: "When it was time to leave the show, I didn't want to go – however, there were no more storylines for Tyler.

"The best thing to do was have him go off on that cruise, but it's been a blimmin' long holiday. I think it's time he came back.

EastEnders continues on BBC One on Thursday at 7.35pm
